VCUarts Qatar Art History graduate students Fatima Al Moftah and Saif Al-Ansari are hosting a family-friendly workshop on traditional childhood games and board games.
This interactive event will introduce visitors to Qatar’s traditional childhood melodies and games, as well as the vibrant culture of board games and tabletop gaming. Discover and play exciting new games from the Khaleej and around the world!
Experience one of the ocean’s most awe-inspiring events during the Whale Sharks of Qatar 2025 season. Taking place at Al Ruwais Port in Northern Qatar, this unique adventure offers a rare chance to observe one of the world’s largest gatherings of whale sharks—right here in Qatari waters. Set sail every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, aboard a high-speed catamaran for a one-day voyage guided by a whale shark expert. You’ll enter a previously restricted ocean zone in the Al-Shaheen region, where up to 300 whale sharks gather each year to feed near the surface.
Experience the elegance and artistry of Arabic calligraphy in this hands-on workshop led by Hussein Ammar Ahmad at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA).
Participants will explore calligraphy inspired by historical pieces displayed in MIA’s galleries. Using glossy ornament paper, you’ll choose a text from the museum’s collection and turn it into a fine art piece with guidance from the instructor.

Join this two-day introductory workshop designed for teens and dive into the fascinating world of Islamic geometry! Held at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), this hands-on session will explore how geometric design developed in the Islamic world and how to identify it in historical art and architecture. Led by Kaltham Al-Thani, the workshop introduces participants to the process of creating a geometric star, which they’ll then transform into a larger patterned design and color using various artistic techniques and mediums.

Discover the beauty of Kufic calligraphy—one of the oldest Arabic scripts—in this engaging two-day workshop for children at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA). Led by artist Maryam AlAbdulla, this hands-on experience introduces participants to the rich history of Kufic script, famously used in many ancient Qur’ans and known for its bold, vertical, geometric forms. Kids will learn about the origins and styles of Kufic calligraphy and create their own Kufic-inspired painting, combining art with cultural education.

Wafa al-Hamad: Sites of Imagination is the first-ever museum exhibition exploring the remarkable 40-year career of Wafa al-Hamad (1964–2012), a Qatari artist, educator, and designer known for her fusion of Arabic calligraphy, abstraction, optical illusions, and dreamlike visuals. The exhibition presents a diverse range of her work including watercolor, oil painting, woodwork, digital art, and archival materials. It draws from Mathaf’s permanent collection along with special loans, providing a unique insight into both global and Gulf influences on modern Arab art.

Qatar: Close to My Soul is a powerful exhibition offering a poetic journey into the heart of Qatar’s past and present through its art. Curated by Fatima Mostafawi, this exhibition draws from the personal collection of Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, showcasing artworks from the late 1960s onward. The exhibition is divided into three thematic sections. The first of these, O’mri Qatar, explores how artists draw inspiration from traditional architectural and natural landscape. The second, Dewdrops, features works portraying society, and the third, Boundless Expanse, presents various experiments in abstraction and hurruffiya, an art form incorporating Arabic letterforms.
