Sheikha Asma Al Thani Summits Mount Makalu, Marks Eighth 8,000-Meter Ascent
Sheikha Asma Al Thani raises Qatari flag atop Mount Makalu

Sheikha Asma Al Thani has successfully reached the summit of Mount Makalu, the world’s fifth-highest mountain, marking her eighth ascent of a peak above 8,000 meters. The milestone reflects her continued pursuit of purpose, resilience, and national pride.

The climb began under the glow of a nearly full moon and followed an earlier attempt that had to be abandoned due to the absence of fixed ropes and unsafe conditions. Demonstrating patience and determination, Sheikha Asma and her team waited until the mountain was ready for a safe ascent, an act that she says embodies the perseverance that defines her journey.

Reflecting on her achievement, Sheikha Asma shared that each mountain has profoundly shaped her. “This journey has never been just about mountains,” she said. “It’s about carrying something bigger-walking with purpose and believing in what’s possible.”

At the summit of Makalu, Sheikha Asma raised the Qatari flag in a powerful gesture of representation, honoring dreamers in Qatar and reinforcing that Qataris belong in every space, even on the world’s highest peaks.

She extended sincere gratitude to her climbing partners, IFM Gatenji, Dawa, and Pasang, for their unwavering support and teamwork throughout the expedition. She also thanked Ooredoo Qatar for ensuring she remained connected, even in the remotest parts of the world.

Sheikha Asma’s accomplishment not only highlights her extraordinary mountaineering feats but also continues to inspire a generation to pursue their goals with passion and belief.
