Qatar and UAE united by Bridge. West Link Project Breaks Ground

proposed West Link causeway route from the UAE to Qatar

The UAE has launched the procurement phase for the West Link project, a 40-kilometre causeway intended to connect Abu Dhabi with Qatar, bypassing Saudi Arabian territory. The proposed road is set to begin near Ras Ghumais in Abu Dhabi and extend to Makasib Island, where a ferry terminal will eventually provide access to Qatar.

This is not the first time a UAE-Qatar causeway has been proposed. In 2005, a similar plan involved a joint company between Abu Dhabi and Doha to manage a crossing from near Sila in Abu Dhabi to the south of Doha.

Currently, road traffic between the UAE and Qatar must pass through approximately 125km of Saudi territory. The new causeway aims to eliminate this detour and significantly reduce travel time between the two Gulf nations.
