Ho Tzu Nyen: Hotel Aporia

Ho Tzu Nyen: Hotel Aporia Exhibition

Hotel Aporia (2019) is a seminal multi-channel installation that exemplifies Ho’s rigorous research and haunting visual language. It functions as a philosophical impasse—an “aporia”—that zooms in on the ideological shadows of interwar Japan. The work features a cast who were complexly entangled with this period through separate trajectories: kamikaze pilots, whose internalized sacrifice was a tactic for national victory; the philosophers of the Kyoto School with conflicted views on war lesser-known than their Zen and Buddhist thoughts; and cultural figures such as filmmaker Ozu Yasujiro (1903-1963) and animation director Yokoyama Ryuichi (1909-2001), both of whom were stationed in Southeast Asia as part of the Japanese Imperial Army’s propaganda units.

we refuse_d Exhibition

We Refuse_d Exhibition

Part of Mathaf’s 15-year anniversary celebration, we refuse_d invites artists to explore the tensions between resilience and action, probing responses to contemporary political and social challenges. we refuse_d brings together fifteen artists whose practices explore refusal, endurance, and action—asking what it means to persist, resist, and create under conditions of silencing, censorship, and displacement. Developed through ongoing dialogue between artists and curators, we refuse_d is both a collective statement and a space for solidarity. It resonates with the spirit of the nineteenth-century Parisian Salon des Refusés, drawing attention to the fragile optimism and resilience that emerge in times of crisis. Most of the works are new commissions, presented by artists who affirm the necessity of art as presence. Through the lens of refusal, their works trace paths of persistence, resistance, heritage, community, collective care, and repair. Above all, we refuse_d is an exhibition about life, persistence, and the necessity of making art.

A Nation’s Legacy, A People’s Memory: Fifty Years Told Exhibition

From our beginnings as one of the first national museums in the region, the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) has continuously embodied the country’s commitment to preserving Qatar’s rich heritage and cultural identity. This landmark exhibition takes you on a journey through NMoQ’s 50–year history, beginning with when the museum was known as the Qatar National Museum (QNM). It features rare exhibits from that period, which have not been displayed since the closure of the old museum alongside reimagined iconic pieces that highlight the forward-thinking spirit of contemporary local artists. Countryside: A Place to Live, Not to Leave Exhibition

Qatar Museums (QM), in collaboration with AMO led by Samir Bantal and Rem Koolhaas – presents Countryside: A Place to Live, Not to Leave, a groundbreaking exhibition that reimagines the rural landscape as a space for sustainability, innovation, and future living. Gabriel Chaile Autorretrato at Mathaf

Autorretrato (Self Portrait) Exhibition

Autorretrato (Self-Portrait, 2022) reimagines the self-portrait through sculptural form rather than facial likeness. Drawing on artist Gabriel Chaile’s Afro-Arab and Indigenous ancestry, Autorretrato (Self-Portrait, 2022) treats these physical elements as a sculptural trace of hybrid identity, shaped by centuries of cultural mixing following the Spanish colonisation of the Americas in the 16th century.

Waters’ Witness by Tarek Atoui Exhibition

Part of Mathaf’s 15-year anniversary celebration, the exhibition explores how sound, water, and urban life intersect, forming an acoustic portrait of maritime communities across global port cities. Waters’ Witness is a sound-based installation by artist and composer Tarek Atoui, presented in the Arab region for the first time. The exhibition explores how water shapes urban life through recordings from international port cities—including Athens, Abu Dhabi, Beirut, Istanbul, Porto, Singapore, and Sydney—captured underwater and along coastal infrastructures.
