Ahmad Al Hamar: Between Rust and Art Exhibition

Ahmad Al Hamar: Between Rust and Art Exhibition

Ahmad Al Hamar’s practice centers on materiality, texture, and layering. He works with elements drawn from daily life, reinterpreting them into minimal artistic compositions. Natural dyes, rust formation, organic matter, and found objects are recurring mediums that weave through his work, reflecting his fascination with transformation and process. During his residency, Ahmad focused on experimenting with techniques and materials, often revisiting the same mediums to uncover new outcomes. In his series “Between Rust and Art”, he explores cultural motifs by deliberately inducing rust on iron sheets a natural process interrupted and reshaped by his intervention. The resulting works highlight the tension between decay and preservation, evoking a dialogue between past and present, tradition, and reinterpretation.

Haifa Al Khuzaie: Threads of Memory Exhibition

Haifa Al Khuzaie: Threads of Memory Exhibition

Haifa Al-Khuzaie’s practice centers on reinterpreting Qatari heritage through contemporary forms, with a particular interest in how traditional motifs carry memory and identity. In “Threads of Memory”, she presents new mixed media works with a focus on handmade ceramics, drawing inspiration from patterns and ornamentation found in local fashion, jewelry, and textiles. Her practice translates traditional elements into sculptural compositions that embody both continuity and transformation. During her residency, Haifa explored the intricacies of embroidery, engraving, and decorative detail in women’s clothing and adornment, allowing their richness of color and design to inform her work. Her practice underscores the enduring presence of cultural knowledge passed through generations. By merging traditional forms with contemporary aesthetics, she creates a dialogue between past and present that honors heritage while imagining its future.

we refuse_d Exhibition

We Refuse_d Exhibition

Part of Mathaf’s 15-year anniversary celebration, we refuse_d invites artists to explore the tensions between resilience and action, probing responses to contemporary political and social challenges. we refuse_d brings together fifteen artists whose practices explore refusal, endurance, and action—asking what it means to persist, resist, and create under conditions of silencing, censorship, and displacement. Developed through ongoing dialogue between artists and curators, we refuse_d is both a collective statement and a space for solidarity. It resonates with the spirit of the nineteenth-century Parisian Salon des Refusés, drawing attention to the fragile optimism and resilience that emerge in times of crisis. Most of the works are new commissions, presented by artists who affirm the necessity of art as presence. Through the lens of refusal, their works trace paths of persistence, resistance, heritage, community, collective care, and repair. Above all, we refuse_d is an exhibition about life, persistence, and the necessity of making art.

Amazigh Hair Couture Exhibition

Amazigh Hair Couture Exhibition

Amazigh Hair Couture celebrates Moroccan Amazigh hair traditions as a living and evolving art form. Through braiding, adornment and ritual, the exhibition explores how hair carries stories of memory, beauty, resistance, and identity, especially within matrilineal Amazigh cultures. What was once objectified and exoticised through colonial and ethnographic lenses is here reclaimed as a vibrant language of self-expression, sovereignty, and cultural pride. Contemporary artists reimagine inherited forms to reflect the strength, creativity, and dignity embedded in these traditions. Moving from archival material to present-day practice, the exhibition affirms hair as a medium of continuity and transformation. Ultimately, Amazigh Hair Couture offers a compelling statement on the politics of care, representation, and the artistic legacies passed from one generation to the next.
