The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is one of Qatar’s most iconic landmarks, renowned globally for its stunning collection of Islamic masterpieces. Spanning centuries and originating from various Muslim countries, it offers visitors a chance to experience the beauty and richness of Islamic traditions, culture, and heritage through carefully preserved art pieces.
Why Visit the Museum of Islamic Art?
The Museum
Opened to the public on 1 December 2008, MIA stands as a source of pride for Qatar. Built in the mid-2000s under the patronage of Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, it has become a must-visit attraction for adults and children alike.
Visitors can enjoy free entry, and the museum operates from Saturday to Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday: 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., and Friday: 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. It is closed on Tuesdays, December 25, and the first day of the two Eids.
In 2017, approximately 411,869 people visited the museum, making it one of Qatar’s most popular attractions.
The Collection
MIA houses an extensive range of Islamic art collected from across three continents, including China, India, and Spain. The collection features jewellery, ceramics, glass, wood, metal, textiles, and manuscripts dating from the 7th to the 20th century.
These exhibits include items from both the homes of influential figures and ordinary people, each telling unique stories that transport visitors through time.
In addition to its permanent collection, MIA hosts temporary exhibitions with artefacts brought specifically to Qatar. It also lends pieces to museums worldwide.
The Library
MIA Library boasts over 15,000 books, making it one of the largest libraries in the Gulf region focused on Islamic art. It includes over 2,000 rare books in Arabic and English, many of which have been digitised.
Children’s books covering topics like art, history, science, and culture are also available. The Islamic Art Creators & Collectors Club within the library provides a platform for artists and enthusiasts to explore ideas about Islamic artworks and preservation.
Visitors can also access e-catalogues, study guides, and other resources to enhance their museum experience.
Dining Options
MIA offers a memorable dining experience at IDAM, the first Middle Eastern restaurant by renowned Chef Alain Ducasse. Located within the museum, it serves contemporary French Mediterranean cuisine with Arabian influences.
For lighter fare, the café in the Atrium area offers nutritious and seasonal dishes, including plant-based, organic, and gluten-free options.
