Google has introduced a range of AI-powered accessibility upgrades on Android and Chrome platforms, designed to enhance digital access for users who are blind or have low vision.
One of the standout updates is the integration of Google’s Gemini AI into Android’s TalkBack screen reader. This powerful feature now allows users to receive AI-generated image descriptions and ask follow-up questions, such as identifying objects or colors within an image.
Another major feature is Expressive Captions, which uses artificial intelligence to transcribe spoken words along with contextual cues like tone, elongated words, and background sounds such as whistling. This enables users to better understand not only what is said but how it is said, improving the clarity of audio content.
On the Chrome platform, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) has been added for scanned PDFs, allowing screen readers to access and read their content—previously a major limitation for visually impaired users.
Chrome for Android also now includes customizable Page Zoom, allowing users to increase text size for better readability without affecting the overall page layout.
These enhancements mark a significant step forward in Google’s efforts to create more inclusive digital environments.
