His Highness the Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the age of 74.
The announcement was made by the Amiri Diwan on Sunday morning, confirming the passing of His Highness the Father Amir.
In its official statement, the Amiri Diwan said: “May Allah have mercy on his soul and grant him the best reward for what he achieved for his homeland and nation.”
The Amiri Diwan also announced a four-day period of general mourning across the State of Qatar in honor of the late Father Amir, beginning Sunday, July 12, 2026.
As part of the mourning period, work will be suspended in ministries, government agencies, public bodies, and public institutions starting Monday, July 13, 2026. Employees will resume their official duties on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
In addition, flags will be flown at half-mast across the country throughout the four-day mourning period.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani played a pivotal role in Qatar’s modern development and served as the Emir of the State of Qatar before becoming the Father Amir. His leadership helped shape many of the country’s key institutions and development initiatives.
