Women-only Mosque and Spiritual Hub

Al Mujadilah is a women-only mosque and centre created specifically as a safe, welcoming space where Muslim women can pray, reflect, and practice their faith together without distraction. Women lead the congregational prayers, with the most knowledgeable woman in the group, such as an instructor or a hafidha, serving as imam for Taraweeh and other congregational prayers, reinforcing women’s leadership in spiritual life.

A dedicated women-only sanctuary in Education City where worship, learning, dialogue, and sisterhood come together in a beautifully designed, purpose-built space.

Architecture, Design, and Olive Trees

Al Mujadilah is recognized as the first purpose-built contemporary women’s mosque in the Muslim world, designed by the renowned architecture studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The complex is centered around two olive trees that rise through the building, symbolizing rootedness and collective growth, while the dune-like exterior, embedded minaret, and undulating qibla wall create a calm, contemplative environment.

Learning Spaces, Classrooms, and Programmes

Beyond worship, the centre houses multiple learning rooms and flexible spaces used for Quran courses, Islamic studies classes, personal development workshops, and public lectures. Programmes cater to women of different ages and backgrounds, including term-based courses, seasonal offerings (such as Ramadan activities and reflection sessions), and events themed around topics like Muslim women in public life.

Café, Gardens, and Social Spaces

The centre includes a café and landscaped gardens that encourage informal meetings, conversations, and moments of rest before or after classes and prayers. Women visit to meet friends over coffee, walk through indoor and outdoor areas, or simply enjoy a peaceful environment away from the city’s hustle.

Library, Research, and Study Environment

Al Mujadilah Centre & Mosque for Women Library
A key feature of Al Mujadilah is its curated library, which can hold more than 8,000 volumes, including works on Islamic history, women’s history, and books by Muslim female authors, both fiction and nonfiction. The library and adjacent study areas are designed as quiet, comfortable spaces where women can read, research, or work remotely, supporting both formal learning and personal exploration.

Prayer Hall and Worship Experience

The 9,400-square-foot main prayer hall features an asymmetrical qibla wall that subtly frames the mihrab and minbar, focusing attention on the direction of prayer and the Friday sermon. Natural light, carefully chosen materials, and acoustic design work together to create a serene atmosphere that enhances khushu’ (concentration) during prayer and recitation.

Community life, Events, and Jadal Summit

Al Mujadilah has quickly attracted a large community, with nearly 20,000 visitors and more than 1,400 women joining its Fall 2024 programmes and public lectures. The centre also hosts Jadal, an annual summit that gathers voices from around the world to discuss Muslim women in public life and the role of women in shaping contemporary discourse.
