Qatar’s National Sport Day will take place during the holy month of Ramadan for the first time in 2027. Scheduled for Tuesday, 9 February 2027, the 16th edition of the annual national occasion will be held under the theme “Ramadan Is an Opportunity,” encouraging citizens and residents to make physical activity part of their daily lives during the holy month and continue practising healthy habits throughout the year.
The National Sport Day Committee announced the details and new identity for the upcoming edition during a press conference at Lusail Sports Arena. The programme aims to raise awareness of the importance of regular physical activity, promote public health and encourage people of all ages and abilities to adopt more active lifestyles.
National Sport Day 2027 Date, Timings and Activities
National Sport Day 2027 will take place on Tuesday, 9 February, with activities organised across Qatar in two periods to accommodate daily routines during Ramadan. The first period will run from 3 PM to 5 PM, before iftar, while the second will take place from 9 PM to 11:30 PM, after Taraweeh prayers. These timings will give participants different opportunities to take part in physical activities during the holy month.
Sports and recreational programmes will be organised at public parks, walking and running tracks, sports facilities and other venues across the country. The activities will include walking, running, fitness exercises, football, basketball, tennis, taekwondo, cycling and swimming. Recreational sports and competitions will also cater to different interests, age groups and physical abilities, allowing individuals and families to choose activities that suit them.
The 2027 edition is expected to feature more than 250 sports and recreational events, with participation from ministries, government entities, public institutions and private sector organisations. The committee will coordinate with participating organisations to compile the programmes and locations, with the final details expected to be announced towards the end of January 2027.
“Ramadan Is an Opportunity” Theme
The theme highlights the importance of using Ramadan as an opportunity to develop healthier routines and make physical activity a regular part of everyday life. Rather than limiting exercise to National Sport Day, the initiative aims to encourage people to overcome inactivity, make positive changes to their habits and continue exercising throughout the year.
Abdulrahman bin Musallam Al Dosari, Advisor to the Minister of Sports and Youth and Chairman of the National Sport Day Committee, said the upcoming edition would offer sports and community programmes suited to the nature of Ramadan. He highlighted the importance of considering the needs of fasting participants and providing opportunities for people to exercise at appropriate times.
He also emphasised that sports should be viewed as a sustainable lifestyle choice rather than an activity linked only to a particular occasion. The initiative supports Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly its objectives related to human development, public health and building a healthy and active society.
Health Awareness and Inclusive Participation
Health awareness will form an important part of National Sport Day 2027. The Ministry of Public Health, working with Hamad Medical Corporation and the Primary Health Care Corporation, will contribute to health awareness activities at participating venues. Health professionals are expected to provide advice and guidance, along with some basic health checks to encourage disease prevention, early detection and healthier lifestyle choices.
The committee is also coordinating with relevant health authorities to prepare a guide for the public on physical activities suited to different health conditions and physical abilities during Ramadan. This initiative aims to promote safe participation and help people make informed decisions about exercising during the holy month.
The event will also place emphasis on including people with disabilities through specialised sports programmes and activities suited to their needs. Efforts will be made to facilitate access to event venues and provide suitable conditions for participation, reinforcing the inclusive nature of this national occasion.
The participating partners include the Ministry of Public Health, Hamad Medical Corporation, Aspetar Hospital, the Primary Health Care Corporation, the Government Communications Office and Qatar Media Foundation.
National Sport Day in Qatar
National Sport Day was established by an Amiri Decree in 2011, designating the second Tuesday of February each year as a national day dedicated to sports and physical activity. Over the years, it has become an established annual occasion encouraging people across Qatar to participate in sports and recognise the importance of health and fitness.
The 2027 edition will introduce a significant change as the occasion coincides with Ramadan for the first time. Through activities planned across the country, the committee aims to encourage wider community participation and promote physical activity as a lasting habit beyond National Sport Day and throughout the year.
