Qatar Museums Unveils Erwin Wurm’s Pink Convertible Big at Place Vendôme
Pink Convertible Big by Erwin Wurm at Place Vendôme

Qatar Museums (QM) unveiled Pink Convertible Big, a bold installation by internationally acclaimed Austrian artist Erwin Wurm, at Place Vendôme. The sculpture gleams in vibrant pink lacquer, immediately drawing attention and inviting viewers to engage with its striking and thought-provoking presence.

Part of Wurm’s renowned Fat Car series, Pink Convertible Big transforms a familiar symbol of aspiration and mobility into a striking sculptural work. The vehicle appears inflated and distorted to absurd proportions, creating a playful yet critical commentary on society’s obsessions. Almost bloated, it seems as if the car has consumed the excesses of modern life itself.

Sheikha Reem Al Thani, Deputy CEO of ALRIWAQ, Public Art, and Rubaiya Qatar, said: “At Qatar Museums, we aim to spark dialogue by bringing insightful art into public spaces. By placing Erwin Wurm’s Pink Convertible Big at Place Vendôme, we turn a familiar symbol of status into a provocative experience that invites us to examine our culture of consumption. This installation demonstrates our commitment to making world-class art an accessible, meaningful part of the everyday experience.”

Crafted from aluminum and finished in a vibrant lacquer, Pink Convertible Big utilises the imagery of obesity to examine the excesses of consumer culture and materialism. The sculpture acts as a cultural mirror, inviting viewers to question the sustainability of modern consumption and our enduring fascination with symbols of prestige. Installed at Place Vendôme, Pink Convertible Big brings Wurm’s thought-provoking artistic practice to a broad and diverse audience in a dynamic public environment.

The installation also highlights the vision of the future Qatar Auto Museum (QAM). As the world nears a critical shift in energy and mobility, QAM explores the automobile’s evolving role in society. Wurm’s work aligns with this mission, inviting the public to examine personal values during this global transition toward sustainable practices.

Erwin Wurm has spent decades redefining the boundaries of sculpture. From his One-Minute Sculptures to his anthropomorphised Fat Cars and Narrow House, Wurm’s work challenges traditional notions of space and form. He has represented Austria twice at the Venice Biennale and held solo exhibitions at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Albertina Museum in Vienna.

Pink Convertible Big underscores Qatar Museums’ commitment to presenting art that challenges perceptions and stimulates dialogue. Transforming a familiar object into a work of reflection, the sculpture prompts the audience to reconsider their relationship to material culture and sustainability in today’s world.
