In Partnership with Qatar Museums, Shell Eco-marathon Kicks Off at Lusail International Circuit as Shell Eco-marathon Qatar 2026 officially commenced with a grand opening ceremony at Lusail International Circuit.

The landmark event is being held under the patronage of HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums. This marks the second time the prestigious competition is hosted in the Middle East, bringing together innovative student teams from across the region and beyond.

Dr. Alkindi Aljawabra, Director of Qatar Auto Museum, highlighted the importance of the partnership, stating that the second year of collaboration with Shell reinforces a long-term commitment to supporting innovation, research, and the next generation of engineers and car designers. By giving students real-world challenges in energy efficiency and aerodynamics, the initiative strengthens the connection between industry and academia while encouraging sustainable mobility solutions.

The opening ceremony celebrated innovation, sustainability, and the spirit of competition. Distinguished guests, including government officials, industry leaders, and academic representatives, attended the launch of the event.

The ceremony featured inspiring speeches, cultural performances, and a showcase of cutting-edge, energy-efficient vehicles designed by participating student teams.

Rob Maxwell, Managing Director of Shell Companies Qatar, expressed appreciation for the partners involved and encouraged student teams to embrace the competition as a rewarding experience that fosters innovation and sustainability.

Shell Eco-marathon is a global academic program that challenges students to design and build vehicles capable of traveling the farthest using the least amount of energy. The initiative pushes technological boundaries and inspires future scientists and engineers to develop advanced energy solutions.

This year’s edition features nearly 1,000 teams from 15 countries, including strong representation from Qatar. Teams are competing in two vehicle categories, Urban Concept and Prototype, powered by internal combustion engines, battery electric systems, or hydrogen fuel cells, showcasing advanced engineering techniques and innovative designs.
