Qatar is set to revive the landmark Sharq Crossing Project, a transformative development that will significantly enhance the country’s infrastructure and urban mobility.

According to a report by Al Sharq Newspaper, the USD 2 billion project will be overseen by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal). It is designed to connect Hamad International Airport, West Bay, Katara Cultural Village, and Lusail City through an impressive network of three iconic bridges and submerged tunnels spanning a total of 12 kilometers.

Once implemented, the Sharq Crossing will help reduce traffic congestion, provide faster travel routes between key districts, and strengthen connectivity across Doha. This initiative is also expected to support economic growth and further elevate Qatar’s position as a regional hub.

The project’s revival comes amid a 3.8% growth in Qatar’s project market, equivalent to USD 8.5 billion, reflecting strong investor confidence in the country’s infrastructure and development plans.

Originally known as the Doha Bay Crossing, the project was first proposed in 2011, with internationally renowned architect Santiago Calatrava commissioned by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning (MMUP) to design the master plan. However, development was delayed due to economic and strategic factors.

The Sharq Crossing is part of a broader slate of major national initiatives, including the fifth package of QatarEnergy’s LNG production sustainability project, valued at up to USD 5 billion.

With its revival, the project promises to transform the way residents and visitors travel between Doha’s most important districts, blending infrastructure innovation with architectural excellence.
