World Observes International Asteroid Day with Global Awareness Efforts
International Asteroid Day 2025 – Global Awareness and Defense Efforts

The world observe International Asteroid Day on June 30, marking a global initiative to raise awareness about the potential dangers posed by asteroids and the importance of planetary defense.

International Asteroid Day is held annually on June 30 in remembrance of the Tunguska event of 1908, when an asteroid exploded over Siberia, flattening 2,000 square kilometers of forest. Though the impact caused no human casualties, it highlighted the potential threat asteroids can pose to life on Earth.

The United Nations General Assembly designated this date through Resolution 71/90 in 2016, urging the international community to recognize the significance of asteroid monitoring and education.

In an exclusive statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), astronomy expert at the Qatar Calendar House Dr. Bashir Marzouq emphasized the importance of the day, noting the efforts of scientific institutions worldwide—including the Qatar Calendar House—in educating the public about asteroids and their behavior.

Dr. Marzouq explained that asteroids are rocky remnants from the formation of the solar system, primarily located in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. While most follow stable orbits, some come close to Earth and are categorized as Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs). He stressed that even a close pass by such an object could pose a serious threat, reinforcing the need for vigilant monitoring and predictive analysis.

Recent global incidents, such as the Chelyabinsk fireball in 2013—which released energy equivalent to 440 kilotons of TNT—have renewed focus on asteroid defense. The Chelyabinsk event was the most significant atmospheric impact since Tunguska.

Globally, institutions like NASA, ESA, and JAXA have led major missions in asteroid tracking and mitigation. NASA’s DART mission in 2022 successfully altered the path of an asteroid, a groundbreaking experiment in planetary defense. The agency also released a documentary titled Planetary Defenders, showcasing the collaborative work of scientists tracking NEAs.

Public initiatives have also grown, with observatories, schools, and science centers conducting educational events and workshops on the topic.

Dr. Marzouq reiterated that no imminent threats are currently identified, but the risk—though low—is never zero. International Asteroid Day serves as a vital reminder of humanity’s shared responsibility to remain informed and proactive in defending Earth from potential cosmic hazards.
